2009-10 Real Estate Scholarship
|
The 2009-10 Real Estate Scholarship Application packet is now available for distribution. Due to the large number of attachments, it is probably best that I send you the URL to access the documents on our Chancellor's Office Student Financial Assistance web page (actually the Real Estate Scholarship Program web page within the Financial Aid site) instead of attaching directly.
You may download 2009-10 information at this site:
http://www.cccco.edu/ChancellorsOffice/Divisions/StudentServices/
StudentFinancialAssistancePrograms/RealEstateScholarshipProgram/tabid/684/Default.aspx
Funding for the scholarships is derived from the interest income earned from the $900,000 endowment provided by the CA Department of Real Estate. Due to the lower interest rates in effect in recent years, our interest income earnings and total amount available for scholarships for the upcoming year will continue to be $30,000 for the 2009-10 academic year...the same as last year but a significant decrease from past years. Although the total amount available has decreased from years past, the individual scholarship amounts have remained unchanged at $400 per semester (or the quarter equivalent for colleges on the quarter term) or $800 per year. Because of the decrease in available funding, the maximum number of recipients per campus will continue to be eight (8).
Scholarships will be funded on a first-come, first-served basis. Please publicize the availability of the scholarships to your students majoring in Real Estate and emphasize the need to apply early. Also, please ensure that all students meet the eligibility criteria PRIOR TO sending the Real Estate Invoice to the Chancellor's Office for funding (criteria is discussed in the Eligibility Guidelines document). In order to facilitate the timely processing of the applications, each invoice MUST BE accompanied by (1) verification that the first 3-unit Real Estate course was completed with a 2.0 GPA or better; AND (2) verification of Real Estate course enrollment for the current term (minimum of 6 RE units); AND (3) verification of Real Estate as major (see Checklist for colleges not offering a Real Estate major); a signed statement on college letterhead by a Financial Aid staff person verifying the Real Estate major is acceptable; as well as (4) a copy of BOTH sides of the Real Estate Scholarship Application. Again, encourage students to apply early. The limited funds can only mean that they will be exhausted much earlier than in past years...and perhaps before the student deadline of submitting the application to the Financial Aid Office by March 15, 2010. After the Financial Aid Office processes, I must receive the Real Estate Scholarship Application, documentation and Invoice sent by the college no later than March 31, 2010. Please be extra careful to send applications ACCOMPANIED BY NECESSARY DOCUMENTATION. Last year I received an overwhelming number of applications with incomplete documentation which caused too much of a delay.
Included with the attachments is a color poster that you can use to print your own copy. Please do so and display in or around your office or elsewhere on campus most likely to be seen by students majoring in Real Estate.
Since a listserv for the Real Estate Education Coordinators is not available, I will be mailing them a hard copy scholarship announcement cover letter with the URL as well as a poster or two. However, as a benefit to your students, you may also wish to forward a copy of this email announcement to your campus Real Estate Education Coordinator and take the opportunity to invite a discussion of the coordination of processing of the scholarship applications with the Coordinator.
In addition, the Real Estate Education Endowment Fund Advisory Committee will most likely have 2 additional memorial Real Estate Scholarships in memory of 2 respected and effective community college Real Estate professors. These scholarships should be in place no later than January 2010 and would require 6 units of Real Estate enrollment in BOTH Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 terms. It would be permissible for general Real Estate Scholarship recipients to also apply for a very limited number of the 2 additional scholarships provided the students meet the specialized eligibility criteria and have unmet need. Interested applicants should be asked to check back with you and/or check the Real Estate Scholarship Program web in early January 2010 to see the Bob Bruss and Dennis McKenzie Real Estate Scholarship applications and to view the scholarship criteria. Once posted to the web page, an announcement will be disseminated to the cfao-all listserv.
